Encouraging Quotes on Prayer

"When God intends great mercy for His people, the first thing He does is set them a-praying." Matthew Henry

“Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees.” William Cowper

"The more you intercede, the more intimate will be your walk with Christ and the stronger you will become by the Spirit’s power." Wesley Duewel

"Satan will contest every hour you spend in Bible reading or prayer." Billy Graham

"This should be the motto of every follower of Jesus Christ. No matter how dark and hopeless a situation might seem, never stop praying." Billy Graham

"Prayer is your way, often the only way, to water the harvest. By prayer you can bring the Holy Spirit’s blessing on any gospel effort anywhere in the world." Wesley Duewel

"There is no way that Christians, in a private capacity, can do so much to promote the work of God and advance the kingdom of Christ as by prayer." Jonathan Edwards

"He that lives a prayerless life, lives without God in the world." Jonathan Edwards

"All you need to do to learn to pray is to pray." Wesley Duewel

"Satan will always find you something to do when you ought to be occupied about [prayer and Bible study] -- if it is only arranging the window blind!" (Hudson Taylor)

"The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied." Jonathan Edwards

"We never know how God will answer our prayers, but we can expect that He will get us involved in His plan for the answer. If we are true intercessors, we must be ready to take part in God's work on behalf of the people for whom we pray." (Corrie Ten Boom)

"True Christian prayer is the faith and reliance of the soul breathed forth in words." Jonathan Edwards

"It will be good to fasten on reports of Christians in several parts of the world ... and learn to intercede with God on their behalf. Not only is this an important expression of the fellowship of the church, it is a critical discipline that will enlarge our horizons, increase our ministry, and help us to become world Christians." (D. A. Carson)

"God's purpose for my life was that I have a passion for God's glory and that I have a passion for my joy in that glory, and that these two are one." Jonathan Edwards

"Prayer is a gift from God as well as an appeal to God.  Even prayer for mercy is not a cause, but a result.  Grace is at the back of prayer, and at the base of prayer."  Spurgeon, Metropolitan Tabernacle Vol.33:633

"It is God's will through his wonderful grace, that the prayers of His saints be one of the chief principal means of carrying on the designs of Christ in the world." Jonathan Edwards

"Prayer is meant by God to be a wartime walkie-talkie, not a domestic intercom ... Prayer is not for the enhancement of our comforts but for the advancement of God's kingdom." John Piper, A Hunger for God, p.150.

"Bear up the hands that hang down, by faith and prayer; support the tottering knees. Have you any days of fasting and prayer? Storm the throne of grace and persevere therein, and mercy will come down." John Wesley

"God does nothing except in response to believing prayer." John Wesley

"I love prayer. It is that which buckles on all the Christian's armor." Matthew Henry

"God has established prayer to give his creatures the dignity of causality." Pascal

"When God is about to do a new thing he always sets his people praying." Jonathan Edwards

"The saint may expect to discover deeper experience and to know more of the higher spiritual life, by being much in prayer ... God alone can take us there; but the chariot in which He takes us up, and the fiery steeds with which that chariot is dragged, are prevailing prayers." (Spurgeon, "The Golden Key of Prayer," in 12 Sermons on Prayer, p.15.)

"When we say: God hears prayer, we do not intend by that, that He always gives us literally what we ask for. We do mean, however, that He gives us what is best for us; and that if He does not give us the mercy we ask for in silver, He bestows it upon us in gold." (Spurgeon, "The Golden Key of Prayer," in 12 Sermons on Prayer, p.13.)

"We do not forget to eat, to work hard at our job, to rest: but we do often forget to wrestle with God in prayer, and to spend, as we ought to spend, long periods in consecrated fellowship with our Father and our God." (Spurgeon, "The Golden Key of Prayer," in 12 Sermons on Prayer, p.8.)

How to Pray by Yourself

  1. Understand that we usually pray to God the Father (Matthew 6:6; Matthew 7:11; Luke 11:13), by the power of the Spirit (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6), in the name of Jesus (John 15:16; John 16:23).
  2. A helpful outline to use is the acronym A-C-T-S. A for Adoration; C for Confession; T for Thanksgiving; S for Supplication (asking).
  3. Don’t wait to pray until you feel close to God. Pray whenever you can, and admit to God if your heart is far from him, or distracted, and ask for his help. He promises that when you draw near to him, he will draw near to you (James 4:8).
  4. There’s nothing wrong with praying more than once for the same request. This does not show unbelief, it shows earnestness. Jesus calls us to persist in prayer (Luke 11:8; Luke 18:7; 2 Corinthians 12:8).
  5. Try different postures as you pray, like standing or kneeling or bowing. Try walking, lifting your hands to God, and praying out loud.
  6. If you find your thoughts wandering, don’t be discouraged. Confess it, ask for God’s help, and keep praying.
  7. Pray prayers that are BIG with declarations of who God is, like in 2 Chronicles 20:6. That will glorify him, and strengthen your faith.
  8. Don’t pray in generalities, like asking God to bless someone. Get more specific.
  9. It’s helpful to pray Scripture, by reading relevant verses, and turning them into prayers. For example, you can use Psalm 145 to help you worship God, Psalm 51 to help you confess your sin, Psalm 13 to cry out for more of God’s presence in your heart, Romans 12 to pray for your own or other’s spiritual growth.
  10. Focus most of your prayer on people’s salvation, faith, and spiritual growth. Do also pray for earthly circumstances, but prioritize spiritual issues
  11. Pray BIG prayers – for God’s glory to fill the earth, for unreached peoples to be saved, for revival to come upon countries, for leaders to be guided and saved, for churches to be planted, cities to be filled with the gospel.

How to Pray in a Group

  1.  Don’t worry about having your prayers sound good; simple, straightforward prayers are best.
  2. Ask for, and expect, the Holy Spirit to give you thoughts about what to pray for, and how to pray.
  3. Pray short prayers, to give others an opportunity to pray.
  4. Pray for one request at a time, so others have a chance to join in.
  5. Feel free to pray more than once, and to pray again for something someone else has already prayed about.
  6. Pray loud enough, and slow enough, so we can understand each other with our different accents and language backgrounds.
  7. If you have prayed a few times, give a bit more time for others to jump in before you pray again.

How to Lead an Effective Prayer Gathering

  1. Prepare for your prayer gathering by praying and asking God to lead and guide your time together.
  2. Read over the possible prayer topics, and ask God to lead you regarding what should be the focus of your prayer gathering (maybe churches in this region, and the Grace Church Home Group Leaders, for example).
  3. When people arrive, start with brief introductions. (Keep it brief so you have lots of time to pray.)
  4. To strengthen everyone’s faith, share a promise regarding prayer (like Matthew 7:7-11; John 15:7; James 5:16-17; 1 John 5:14-15; Psalm 91:14-16), or a powerful quote on prayer (see above list), or a time when God powerfully answered prayer (like Acts 4:29-31; Acts 12:1-7; 2 Chronicles 20:1-23).
  5. Share with people what you believe the focus of your prayer gathering should be. Encourage people to pray loudly, briefly, and more than once. Explain that it’s good to pray again for something that’s already been prayed about.
  6. Let people know how long the prayer time will last, and be punctual.
  7. Encourage people to feel free to share any spiritual gifts God gives them during the prayer time.
  8. Maybe open by praying for your prayer time – that God will give you faith, that he will help you pray, that he will lead you and guide you and pour his Spirit upon all of you. If you are musically inclined, maybe lead everyone in a worship chorus like “Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me,” or “I have decided to follow Jesus,” or “Amazing Grace,” or “Thou Art Worthy.”
  9. Pray as long as you have committed. If you still have a few minutes, ask people to share what the Holy Spirit was doing in their hearts. Was he giving them faith for something? Leading them to pray for something? Encouraging them in some special way? This will be be encouraging for others to hear.
